Homes for Families would like to thank everyone who called Sen. Scott Brown’s office last week encouraging him to sign on to Sen. Kerry’s letter supporting an extension for the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Emergency Contingency Fund (TANF ECF) program. (In Massachusetts, TANF is called TAFDC) While 31 Senators signed the letter, not including Sen. Brown, there is currently not enough energy in Congress to extend the program, which will expire on Sept. 30th, although many Senators do support it. A flood of phone calls into Sen. Kerry’s office will help him to make the case to other Senators that this is a program worth extending.
Please take a minute again and call his office at (202) 224-2742 to:
1. Thank him for “being a champion of TANF ECF and taking a leadership role in trying to extend this benefit.”
2. Ask him to “please continue to encourage other Senators to support the creation of employment and housing opportunities for families by extending TANF ECF, which is set to expire next week.”
TANF ECF was part of the original stimulus package and can be used to fund subsidized employment for low-income families, non-recurrent short-term benefits (like rental assistance), and basic/cash assistance. An estimated 200,000 jobs have been created nationally through the ECF, and money has been used to support HPRP activities. Massachusetts was given about $1.2 million, and we have used almost all of it.
